Indiana steel mill photographs [graphic], 1920-1940.

This collection contains photographs from five different Indiana steel companies from the 1920s through the 1940s. The photographs show the Chapman-Price Steel Company of Indianapolis, the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, the Illinois Steel Co., the Rust Furnace Company, and the American Sheet and Tin Plate Company, all of Gary, Indiana. The four Gary, Indiana mills in this collection are part of the larger U. S. Steel Gary Works. The photographs are mostly of equipment, but do show workers in some of the images of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation and Illinois Steel Co.

The Illinois Steel Company was formed in 1889 by the merger of several Chicago-area steel concerns. During the 1890s, it was the largest steel producer in the western United States. Construction of the Gary Works steel plant at Gary, Indiana began in the summer of 1906. The Gary Works was a subsidiary of the Illinois Steel Company, which was in turn a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel). The plant in Gary became operational in 1908.
